![]() There was a time and place for RTS to be a mainstream genre, and I just think we are well past that point.ĭiablo is safe because people still fucking love loot games, but Warcraft and Starcraft RTS seem completely dead to me, unless Blizzard were to make some kind of hybrid of RTS and MOBA as some kind of weird new genre (ironically I guess I'm describing Warcraft 3), but then they'd be undercutting their own Heroes of the Storm. I just don't think there is a wide appetite for RTS now that there are so many other genres of PC game, and if people want a competitive game where you right click to move and hotkey to cast specific abilities, MOBAs exist and are more accessible. I don't, however, feel any urgency to play Legacy of the Void, as much as I never really wanted to play Heart of the Swarm immediately when it was released (heck I literally bought it barely a month ago, talk about being late to the party). I just don't want to see any story-related spoilers. Wings of Liberty did indeed catch on for a while when there hadn't been a big RTS in years, but Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void did not maintain those player numbers, through no fault of their campaigns or multiplayer metas. That's not because I'm not interested it in, however. Or more specifically, I don't see them having that hubris again, since SC2 was already Blizzard displaying that hubris. I just don't see Blizzard having the hubris to think they can singlehandedly revive the RTS genre.
